Normandy’s historic capital, an hour up the Seine. A Gothic cathedral immortalised by Monet, medieval half-timbered lanes, and the square where Joan of Arc met her end.
An hour up the Seine lies Normandy’s historic capital. Notre-Dame cathedral — the façade Monet painted more than fifty times as the light changed — is a peak of flamboyant Gothic. The 14th-century Gros-Horloge astronomical clock spans the liveliest pedestrian street, and the Place du Vieux-Marché marks where Joan of Arc was burned in 1431, now watched over by a strikingly modern church. All around, hundreds of leaning half-timbered houses fill the medieval quarter, and the former ossuary of the Aître Saint-Maclou is unlike anything else.

Rouen is a comfortable full day rather than a rush. The drive is about an hour each way, so leave in the morning, give yourself the afternoon in the old town, and keep an eye on the clock for the return. Park once at the underground Vieux-Marché car park — the historic centre is compact and best explored entirely on foot. Because the car is yours, you decide when to head back, with a sensible margin before all-aboard.
The A150 runs an easy hour from the terminal to the city. Leave the car at the Vieux-Marché car park in the centre and walk everything — the medieval streets are pedestrian and close together. Break for a crêpe and a glass of cider in the lanes, and if time allows, drive ten minutes up the Côte Sainte-Catherine for a superb panorama over Rouen and the bends of the Seine. One fixed price, one car for the group.
About an hour each way, roughly 90 km via the A150. An easy run up the Seine valley.
Leave in the morning after you disembark. An hour’s drive each way makes for a comfortable full day with a safe return margin.
The underground Vieux-Marché car park is central; from there the historic quarter is entirely walkable.
Not with a morning start and a sensible return time. In your own car there is no fixed train to catch — you choose when to drive back.
The cathedral, the Gros-Horloge, the Place du Vieux-Marché and the half-timbered quarter, comfortably on foot.
