Caen highlights

The highlights of Caen

An hour and a quarter west is the city of William the Conqueror. The Caen Memorial is one of Europe’s great history museums, devoted to war and peace — allow a full half-day for it. William’s ducal castle, among the largest fortresses in Europe, gives ramparts and city views, while the Romanesque Abbaye aux Hommes he founded — and where he rests — is architecturally magnificent. For lunch, the cobbled Vaugueux quarter and its half-timbered houses are the heart of old Caen.

Our tips

Plan your day right

Caen is a comfortable day out. The drive is about an hour and fifteen each way, so a mid-morning departure works, though an earlier start gives the Memorial the time it deserves. Book Memorial tickets online to skip the queue, especially in summer. Many visitors pair the city with the D-Day beaches, 20–30 minutes further on. You choose the return time in your own car, so the day flexes around you.

Getting around

Caen behind the wheel

The A13 and then the N158 make an easy hour-and-a-quarter run from the terminal. Park in a central car park to reach the castle and abbeys on foot. If you are combining Caen with the coast, the D-Day beaches are a short drive west — one car handles both with no timetable to keep. Lunch is best in the Vaugueux, and the whole day comes at one fixed price for the group.
